It is a 45-year-old, four-story reinforced concrete condominium. The plan is to renovate a small dwelling unit of about 60 square meters. Situated on a plateau in a scenic area rich in natural surroundings, the buildings were arranged in such a way that they drew generously from north to south and had openings only from north to south. When I saw the exterior, it made me imagine a life where light and wind flowed through from north to south. However, the floor plans of the existing units were divided into smaller sections and were far from the life they were made to imagine. Therefore, in this project, it was first decided to remove the partition walls as much as possible to allow natural light and wind to penetrate deep into the dwelling. However, I was concerned about the strength of the existing wall, which inevitably divides the center. As a result of examining how to reduce the strength of the existing wall through a basic configuration. The space is planned as a three-layered plan with a waist wall to emphasize the sense of unity in the north-south direction. In the details, the wall seating and partition curtains sway in the wind and change their expression in the light. The intention was to create a rich response relationship with the external environment, with movement/transparent details. While the strength of the existing walls bothered me. There was a sense of discomfort that life would be cooped up in this place if it were to cover the whole thing with a clear composition. The existing exposed wall that divides the center is a cutting surface cut into the living space so that it does not end up in a configuration that covers the dwelling unit. It was considered to be an important factor in spreading awareness from dwelling units to buildings and from buildings to cities.
Decades later, I still think and respond to the thought that this is how I wanted my life here to be. I believe that the comfort of living in this environment can be attained by incorporating a charm that will not change over time.
