Maebashi◯◯tokku45days is a general term for “social actions by all the citizens of Maebashi” to enliven the city by their own initiative.A place where people who visit the square can find their own place and spend their time in their own way was needed. While satisfying these requirements, I wanted to bring back the essential elements of the original landscape of a regional city: the scent and shade of trees, a big sky, and a pleasant breeze. Therefore, I designed human-scale mobile items that are not too big for nature and a hill of pixelated palettes that create an individual place to be. Each mobile item is dotted around the plaza as a starting point for people’s activities, and the pallet hills provide a great grounding to allow for non-interactive gatherings. This is a manifestation of an environment that does not force people to interact with each other, which emphasizes maintaining a moderate sense of distance, and because it does not create excessive interaction, it can continue to be a collection of diverse individuals. What we have here is a public space where people can feel comfortable coming together in discrete groups.
Even after the exhibition, the mobile items created by the artist have been deployed in nearby public spaces and are used in a variety of situations.
