This is an interior design project for a restaurant. The client’s requirements were not only to be unoccupied, short term construction, and low cost, but also to be able to handle events, material images, and to collaborate with various members by using a separate order system that takes advantage of the client’s horizontal connections. As we deepened our dialogue with the client, we found out that the intention of collaborating with various members was not only to build a community by creating a place from the bottom up, but also that the client, who dislikes harmony, was expecting some kind of accident. In the first place, the project itself was an accident in itself, as it was difficult to make bold changes due to various conditions, so the theme of the design was how to take on ” inevitability.
First of all, when I thought about how to face the project, I thought that the ideal policy would be to work side by side with various members along the time axis and design the project while responding to the output. However, in order to respond to the accidents expected by the client, we could not take on the challenge unprotected, so some kind of tactic was necessary. In considering the tactics, we thought that we would not be able to take advantage of the accident if we designed the entire space to converge toward a specific spatial image. If we create a hierarchy that unifies the entire space, the disparate things that participate in that space will just be placed in different places. This would not be a state of coexistence of different things. In order to avoid such a situation, I aimed to create a state where the image of a space emerges from a collection of fragments, and consciously designed a relationship between the space and the things that participate in the space in such a way that they can be treated equivalently.
As for the design process, I consciously planned neutral components by using monotone for the large area of the walls and floor, and from there I made preparations so that I could balance the whole while locally modifying the space. The majority of the study began with the adjustment and arrangement of the members’ responsibilities, and the repetition of ad hoc decisions and revisions based on the relationships between the objects that appeared one after another, but it was necessary to adjust the balance of strength and weakness so that the space of phenomena would not be drowned out by the objects. The strong decision to paint the columns, which play a particularly important role, in orange at an early stage served as an effective criterion for considering the project from various perspectives, and we were able to achieve a balance between the orange columns visible from the outside, the orange of the entrance floor, the orange columns visible from the inside, the green of the hanging plants that serve as complementary colors, and the green of the stage floor. It also served as a starting point to give rhythm to the spatial experience.
I was also careful about how I behaved as a designer. I consciously avoided situations where I had to control everything, and took the stance of soliciting ideas, accepting them, and then responding to them. This attitude was successful in making the dialogue with the members stimulating and led to the creation of various unexpected things. For example, the client created the herringbone pattern for the top of the table, which can be disassembled according to the event, and the builder made a number of suggestions for the finish of the top.
The result of these adjustments is a space in which relationships have been established to the extent that the fragments feel loosely connected to each other, and a comfortable sense of disjointedness has been achieved. This sense of disunity enhances the exchangeability of things, and when new things enter the space and form relationships with the fragments scattered around, a coexistence relationship is established. Therefore, there is always room for change. I am sure that the interactive dialogues with diverse members exchanged through the project will continue in the future. I would like to enjoy the changing aspects of the world that I do not know with them forever.
